The Uelzen Kuhlau Edition

Badge of Honor for Prof. Dr. Richard Müller-Dombois

The renowned flautist, long-time juror and advisor of the Kuhlau Competition, as well as lecturer and publisher Prof. Dr. Richard Müller-Dombois from Detmold, was awarded the Badge of Honor of the Hanseatic City of Uelzen in 2017. Over a period of 17 years, Prof. Dr. Müller-Dombois has accurately edited flute compositions by the German-Danish composer Friedrich Kuhlau, who was born in Uelzen in 1786. The complete edition of Kuhlau's flute works was successfully completed in 2017 and comprises 62 volumes. Prof. Dr. Richard Müller-Dombois initiated and edited the Kuhlau Edition. It has been published by Syrinx Verlag since 2001 with the support of the Hanseatic City of Uelzen. Jürgen Markwardt, Mayor of the Hanseatic City of Uelzen, recognized the meticulous work on this well-conceived edition by awarding the ‘Ehrennadel’ of the Hanseatic City of Uelzen. About Prof. Dr. Richard Müller-Dombois: Richard Müller-Dombois studied flute, musicology, sociology, and Romance studies in Freiburg, Detmold, and Berlin. He was principal and solo flautist of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, worked for four years as a permanent assistant with the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan, and was a lecturer and professor at the Detmold University of Music for over 30 years. In 1986, he founded Syrinx-Verlag, a publishing house specializing in flute music. Since 1986, he has also supported the International Friedrich Kuhlau Flute Competition as an artistic advisor and, until 2007, as a member of the jury. Since 2000, he has also been the editor and publisher of the complete edition of Kuhlau's flute works under the series "Uelzen Kuhlau Edition." Prof. Dr. Richard Müller-Dombois died on December 8, 2021, shortly before his 88th birthday.

Since 2001 Kuhlau's works have been published in der Uelzen Kuhlau Edition (UEKE). This edition, which is supported by the Hanseatic City of Uelzen and published by Syrinx Verlag in admirable detail, is highly recommended to the participants in the competition.
