Congratulations to Ryo Yamanishi and Shigetora Yokoi, who won first prize at the International Friedrich Kuhlau Flute Competition! This will be duly celebrated with an evening of musical poetry. Nicholas Milton leads his Göttingen Symphony Orchestra and the two soloists through a program of works that are connected by their narratives of events beyond themselves. Bedrich Smetana's "Die Moldau" is the second part of his six symphonic poems " Mein Vaterland“. The musically retraced course of the Moldau River is among the most famous pieces of program music ever. Erwin Schulhoff also wrote his Concerto for Flute, Piano, and Orchestra at the height of his fame. He was a pioneer in the fusion of jazz elements and incorporates echoes of the flute music of Fauré and Debussy into the concerto. Dvořák's Symphony No. 8 is no less famous: relaxed optimism, cheerfulness, and unbroken joie de vivre testify to a happy period of its creation, during which his symphonic language became emancipated. The finale, bursting with vigor and captivating, rounds off the evening.
